Information about the surgery

An otoplasty or ear surgery is an operation that resolves any deformity of the ears for aesthetic purposes.

There are several types of ear surgeries. One is the correction of protruding ears, which involves reducing the angle of the ear against the head by means of permanent sutures. A second type is called reduction otoplasty, performed in cases of excessively large ears. Depending on the patient’s needs, it may involve the removal of excess cartilage from the structure of the outer ear and repositioning the ear at an appropriate angle. There is also the possibility of undertaking complex reconstructions.

In interventions to correct protruding ears, the patient can lead a normal life shortly after the surgery. It is recommended that he/she wears sports tape for at least 15-20 days to ensure the permanence of the results. In cases of large ear reduction, the recovery process may take several days. For information regarding complex reconstructions, please consult us.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I know which type of ear surgery is best for me?
Depending on the specific needs of the patient, a different type of ear surgery is proposed. Reduction of large ears: performed when the size of the patient’s ears is too big. Correction of protruding ears: performed when the patient needs a correction of the angle and position of the ears. Complex ear reconstructions: performed when there are congenital malformations such as microtia (small undeveloped ears), cagot ear, cleft ear (ears with pathological indentations) or other deformities that can be resolved surgically.
What does each type of surgery consist of?
Reduction of large ears: also called reduction otoplasty, consists of removing the excess of cartilage and defining a more harmonic shape. Correction of protruding ears: also called pinnaplasty, it is a simple surgery which consists of folding the ear pavilion so that it does not protrude laterally. The estimated duration is from 1 to 2 hours. Complex ear reconstructions: sometimes it is necessary to perform a cartilaginous graft from the costal tissue.
What kind of anaesthesia is used?
Reduction of large ears: it can be performed with local anesthesia or with general anesthesia. Correction of protruding ears: it can be performed with local anesthesia. Complex ear reconstructions: these are more complex surgeries that usually require general anesthesia.
